At about 36 years of age, the Addis Ababa University department of surgery is one of the pioneers of higher education in Ethiopia. It started the first postgraduate training in 1980.The first three qualified surgeons to graduate from the department were:

  1. Adem Ali
  2. GirmaMelaku
  3. Mesfin Minas 

Since then, over 250 Surgeons have graduated from the department.Currently, there are a total of 170 surgical residents attending the postgraduate program in 7different government and private hospitals in Addis Ababa
 
Faculty
The current department head is Dr. DerejeGulilat, Assoc. professor of surgery, who graduated from the department in 1991 and also served as the Dean of school of medicine.
There are 5 specialty units and 1 sub-specialty unit within the department. The department has a total of around 71 staff members made up of 4 Professors, 9 Assoc. professors, 31 Assist. Professors and 26 lecturers distributed in the various specialty and sub-specialty units. The following are the unit departments with their respective unit heads:

  3. Neurosurgery:- Dr. HagosBiluts
  4. Pediatrics Surgery:- Dr. AmezeneTadesse

  6. Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery: Dr. YohannesDemissie

The department teaches clinical year I and year II students through the following teaching activities:

As part of the post-graduate training, residents are obliged to attend daily morning sessions at 8:00am on weekdays except on Wednesdays which arededicated to academic activities for post-graduate students.
