Background

The Department of Pharmacology was first established as a unit under the Institute within the Faculty of Medicine in 1966. It was later upgraded to the status of department in 1974. The Department launched its MSc program in Pharmacoloy in 1993 and the PhD program in Pharmacology in 2011.
Objectives of the Department

Teaching

To impart relevant knowledge in the field to medical, nursing, dentistry and medical lab technology students;
To train through its MSc program high caliber pharmacologists who will ultimately take part in teaching, research and service activities in different health institutions.

Research

To carry out problem-oriented research in different areas of pharmacology, with special emphasis on research priorities of the country

Service

To render both consultancy and laboratory services
Current activities

Teaching

Offers courses in basic pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and clinical toxicology to medical and dental students;
Offers a course in pharmacology to nursing, midwifery and radiography undergraduate and graduate students;
Runs thesis-based MSc program in pharmacology;
Runs Non-thesis MSc program in pharmacology;
a PhD program in pharmacology.
