In Ethiopia, training program in Medical Laboratory Technology/Sciences began in 1954; at the then Institute de Pasteur, currently named as the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI). It is the first training center to offer medical laboratory technology education in the country.
After passing through different phases of maturation, this training center was entrusted from EHNRI to the Ministry of Health and later to the Ministry of Education and became an independent school. Since its establishment, it has been considered a center of excellence for other universities in the country.
Over the years the department has trained many laboratory professionals through various levels of study programs including diploma (2-3 years of training, medical laboratory technicians) and BSc degree (4 years, Medical Laboratory Technologists). In 2009, the department has launched a graduate program (MSc) in clinical laboratory science on four specialty programs (Clinical Chemistry, Hematology & Immunohematology, Clinical Laboratory Management & Quality Assurance and Diagnostic and Public Health Microbiology)
