1.Rationale of the Program

Any learning program in higher institutions will have its own set of expectations and such program demand would have derived through many inputs. Such inputs would normally come from the interest of stakeholders including the teachers, students, industry, government …etc. The old educational system had its own drawbacks. So, to improve such drawbacks, implementation of modularization approach in higher education institutions is imperative. This approach is demanding due to recommendations made in the BPR document, the Higher Education Council direction, and the theoretical grounds. Besides, the existing curricula and educational program of the department has also suffered from the limitations such as mismatch between the outcomes and expectations, changes in the industry trends, new development or alterations of the current knowledge and practices as well as new domains. On top of these the old curriculum is a credit based approach and hence it does not reflect the actual workload of the student and the outcome of the program.  These forces have played prominent role for initiation of modular approach in the department.

The overall goal of the degree program is to create competent, highly skilled and committed cooperative professionals capable of promoting the cooperative sectors and thereby contributing to the overall development effort of the country.

  1.  Specific objectives of the program

         The specific objectives of cooperative program are:

  • To produce cooperative professionals equipped with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and ability to transform and promote the cooperative sector in a sustainable manner,
  • To produce socially accountable professionals who would manage, technically support and give alternative solutions to Cooperative problems through research,

1. 3.Graduate profile

The graduates with B.A degree in Cooperatives Business Management will have the following competencies:

  • Know concepts, theories, principles and philosophy of cooperatives, cooperative organization and management
  • Conduct need assessment and organize cooperatives,
  • Prepare organizational plans, manage cooperatives, offer training and consultancy services
  • Managing financial institutions like SACCOS, micro finance, cooperative banks, commercial and developmental banks
  • Promoting and strengthening cooperatives role in alleviating poverty; and develop the attitude of self-help, self-reliance and self-employment. Moreover, they show the basic sense of honesty, unity and dedication in executing tasks they are assigned for
  • Organizing, managing and leading higher level economic cooperatives institutions  in the country like cooperatives unions, cooperation federations and leagues
  •  Conducting research to solve problems in the community
  • Give  training  in higher educational institutions, TVET colleges, and training centers
  • Organize and manage business enterprises such as commercial farms, agro processing units, consumer stores, export and import based businesses  and other business enterprises
  • Plan, implement and administer community based development projects in association with governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Graduates of Cooperative Accounting and Auditing students will provide with a base in accounting and auditing skills, and concepts and methods of cooperative organizations.  Graduates of cooperative accounting and auditing have a wide range of work opportunities; they can work in cooperative societies, cooperative organizations and promotion bureaus, financial cooperatives and institutions,  and cooperative training institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations as, accountants, auditors, researchers and teachers.

In particular, after completion of this training, graduates of cooperative accounting and auditing graduates will have the following competencies:

  • Know concepts, theories, principles and philosophy of cooperation and  cooperative organizations
  • Work clerical activities like, keeping general accounts, records and reports; payroll processing and billings
  • Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements competently
  • Provide Audits, consultancy and training services for cooperatives in particular and for other organizations in general
  • Analyze, interpret and communicate cost and related information to management for planning, control and decision making.
  • Discover urgent and enduring solutions to problems encountered in accounting and auditing of Cooperatives and other organizations
  • Analyze and design accounting information systems, and use proper computer applications in business transaction cycles
  • Work with the dynamic business environment by applying basic accounting and auditing functions and skills to achieve Cooperatives objectives
  • Plan, implement and administer community based development projects in association with governmental and non-governmental organizations
