If ever increasing enrolment is any indication then, Arba Minch University, is rapidly becoming the most favored destination for continuing and distance education and this fastest growing mode is indeed giving wings to many to pursue their dreams!
Continuing education in AMU, had its origin in the backdrop of Arba Minch Water Technology Institute in 1997, with few short-term trainings, is now a full-fledged college for 11817 students that runs 30 different disciplines through Arba Minch, Soddo, Sawla, Addis Ababa and Omo Kuraz (to be launched soon) centres.
The progress of College of Continuing and Distance Education (CCDE) is invariably linked to AMU as its overall strength constitutes 36.33% of AMU’s overall enrolment (32524), while Institute of Technology with its 8209 students makes it 25.23% only.
College Dean, Dr Serekebirhan Takele, said, students prefer AMU because it has become more reputable in science, technology and health disciplines. Summer in particular is more convenient program for most applicants; Weekend and Distance also have good numbers of students
The available data puts this year enrolment at 11817, which has gone up by 31.63% (2840) compared to last year’s figure 8977; it has further bolstered the overall strength of male (8594) and female (3223) students by 29.68% and 37.14% respectively.
As usual this year too summer accounts for 54% of total enrolment; while evening stood at 30% distance 7%, PGDT 8% and weekend has 1%; last year’s percentile was 51.58%, 29.85%, 8.83%, 9.06% and 0.065% .
In 2015, CCDE’s annual budget was ETB 16.5 Million, this year it’s ETB 19 Million. Of its 30 staff, four are academic and others administrative. Last year, 1400 students graduated and this year it expects 1000; every year approximately 1200 to 1300 new students are being added.
According to gender-wise data, this year too, males stood tall with 72.72% (8594), and females continue to trail with 27.27% (3223). Last year’s story was same with males accounting for 73.82% of total strength and females have had barely 26.17% (2350) of total enrolment.
Similarly, this year’s both male and female students’ overall enrolment is up by 44.72% and 44.85% respectively, yet females have just added 998 to their strength while males have shown the rise of 2656 to their total strength.
Institute and college-wise data also puts CCDE on the forefront as unlike in regular mode, Institute of Technology continues to dominate for hosting 22.10% (2621) of total students; last year, the figure was 23.66% (2124).
College of Business and Economics came tagging behind for hosting 21.40% (2529) students which last year were 19.73% (1772). College of Social Science and Humanities’ this year’s 1826 figure indicates marked rise of 52% to its strength compared to previous 1199.
Presently, CCDE situated at Nechsar Campus is headed by Dean has four different offices i.e. Continuing Education to oversee Evening, Weekend and summer programs; Distance Education for distance programs, office of registrar and administrative & logistics office.
With sustained progress all across, CCDE in future expects to have its own infrastructure. Presently, its students are being graduated along with regular students but later, it might also consider hosting its own convocation, Dr Serekebirhan opined.
On validity, he said, both non-regular and regular programs are equally relevant in the market. The college adheres to standard admission criteria to maintain quality and successfully has kept attrition rate to the minimum.
