About The Department
Biology, the science of life, is built on understanding life at the molecular, cellular, organismal population and community levels. The study of biology has both basic aspects (systematized acquisition of knowledge on living things and their environments) and applied aspects (the use of acquired knowledge to benefit human beings). The applied aspects of biology have vast practical applications in agriculture, industries, medicine, biotechnology, genetic engineering, environmental protection and biodiversity conservation management. Biological issues are at the heart of the daily life and survival of humans irrespective of differences in culture, geographical location, wealth and levels of advancement. Biological principles are practiced ranging from primitive societies that use crude ways of getting food and other survival requirements from the immediate environment through hunting and gathering to the most advanced societies that use cutting edge technologies to solve problems that challenge the survival and wellbeing of mankind. Research in climate change, biofuel production, and rapid propagation of crops, gene therapy and cloning are examples of the latter category.
The relevance and importance of teaching science in general and Biology in particular in teaching and research to Ethiopia is thus apparent. As a developing nation aspiring to achieve overall advancement, the country has the option to combine both low and high level knowledge in biology to benefit its society particularly in the areas of food security, health, environmental protection and climate change. The country promotes the science of biology through advanced level University study and research.
Department of Biology is one of the pioneer departments established under the then faculty of Education. It commenced its work in the year 2000E.C. when Samara University became fully operational. The department started its teaching-learning process through 12 instructors (3 lecturers and nine graduate assistants). At this time, the Department has 16(sixteen) on duty lectures, 1(one) GAII, 7(seven) are on study leave among which 4 PhD candidates and 3 are MSc candidates. Moreover, the Department has 3(three) lab technicians. The faculty of Education was separated into two colleges namely; Colleges of Natural and Computational Science (CNCS) and Colleges of social science and Humanities (CSSH). The Department became one of the 7 Departments reorganized under the Colleges of Natural and Computational Science (CNCS). Since then the Department is striving to provide, mainly, the growing demand of the trained manpower in research and teaching quality education in biological science.
The Department of Biology is the hub for the basic biological sciences at Samara University. It is one of the active departments under the College of Natural Sciences offering different courses to undergraduate levels. Starting from 2002 E.C the department started summer diploma program and one year later (i.e.2003 E.C.) it launched summer degree program. From 2000-2004 E.C. the Department offered training in a regular Bachelor of Education in Biology (B.Ed.) programme. Starting from September 2003 E.C., the B.Ed. curriculum was replaced by B.Sc. in Biology at a national level and started running undergraduate program in applied Biology. Currently, the Biology Department has been training Bachelor of Science in Biology (B.Sc.) through regular and summer-in-service programmes using the newly developed need-driven curriculum to partly fulfill the millennium development goals.
The Department of Biology has been strongly striving to improve the teach-learning processes via the recently refined and need-based curricula through student-centered learning process. The research activities of our Department are staff-based research projects activities where the academic staff members directly involve. In terms of trained human resources, the Department has unexploited potential to conduct scientific researches in various biological disciplines, provide special trainings to personnel from laboratory technicians at high schools etc. To consolidate the knowledge of students in science, the Department has been providing Community Service to students of different high schools through Mobile laboratory along with other field of sciences.
