Message From Department Head
It was based on a strong conviction and the recognition of social demand and plan of the government and given the importance of livestock in the region, Samara University has launched department of veterinary medicine in 2004 that serves a vital, core function in the social and economic well-being of Afar people through improving the poor veterinary services encountered in the region particular and to the nation as a whole. The establishment of the veterinary medicine program at the heart land of the pastoral community demonstrates a major leap forward with far reaching out comes of local, national, regional and global significance.
Livestock are the bedrock of livelihood of the population as well as important contributors to the regional economy in the Afar region and national economy in general. However, various complexly interacting factors are limiting the full exploitation of potentials held by regional livestock resources. Shortage of animal production and health related inputs and services are among the principal challenges. Livestock diseases are the bottle neck of the development of this sector.
The establishment of the department has a great significance in solving and satisfying the needs of trained veterinary graduate professionals to the country as a whole and to the efficient utilization of huge livestock resources of the region and eventually in satisfying food security, improving health and well being of the community through control of zoonotic diseases in the Afar region. Therefore, the department of veterinary medicine will play a great role on the improvement of the animal and human health in the region.
