Continuing and Distance Education Program (CDEP)
Background
In our country Ethiopia the fate of future higher education needs extremely the participation of scholars and all concerned bodies who have common understanding on the missions and objectives of higher educational institutions. This helps to produce productive and creative citizens who can come up with possible solutions to different problems of the country.
Basically, the expansion of higher education is very much helpful to eradicate illiteracy and poverty. Moreover, it helps citizens to attend their regular and continuing education programs so as to contribute to the overall development of the country in all aspects of life.
Education in evening, summer in – service, Satellite and distance mode are intended to be given for working adults. Such works are to be managed by the Institute of continuing and distance education. Therefore, the continuing and distance education Serve as:
§ A bridge between the university and community;
§ Useful intervention to motivate and maintain academic and administrative staffs of the university by generating revenue and providing scholarship.
Taking the above main roles of higher educational institutions into consideration, Mettu University with its under lying vision and objective is handling the teaching and learning process, research and community based services depend in on the feasibility and need assessment results. In the case of teaching and learning activities, the University is providing education in regular and continuing modes to achieve its objectives.
From 2004 E.C in line with the regular education program, the University has launched eight (8) Weekend programs, namely Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Management, Health Officer, Clinical Nursing, Construction Technology, Information Technology (IT) and Accounting; Three (3) Evening programs (Public Health Officer, Clinical Nursing & Civil Engineering) and Ten (10) summer programs, namely Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Sport Science, Afan Oromo, English, Geography, Civics and Public Health Officer at Mettu (in-campus site) and Four (4) Weekend and Four (4) Summer programs namely Animal Science, Plant Science, Natural Resource Management and Agro-Economics (at Gambella Off-campus site). In addition the university has opened new three (3) weekend programs i.e Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Economics at Bedelle town.
Objectives
Mettu University Continuing Education Program (MeU CDEP) has planned to achieve the following objectives in 2007 E.C.
1. Contributing educated man power in the capacity building of the country by increasing its hosting capacity from 1300 to 3780 in different education programs in the Continuing (weekend, evening, summer) and distance education programs in line with the regular programs.
2. Increasing the university’s internal income by to 4,404,400.00 birr by expanding the education services in different education programs
Training Duration
Each degree takes between 3 ½ and 6 years (depending on the nature of the program).

NOTE: every one academic year of each weekend and evening program has two full winter terms/semesters and one summer term/semester while summer program involves one summer semester.

*Off-campus Tuition Fee is related to courses to be offered by teachers from the main campus at Bedeelle and Gambella Campus.
**In- campus Tuition Fee is related to courses to be offered by teachers from Gambella Campus itself.
Note: – Regarding the tuition fee, these rates change whenever situations force. The university tries its best to balance between cost of training and the capacity of the customers to pay. Everyone involved in the program is advised to examine the market situations in the country and take action accordingly.
|As mentioned in the above table, the tuition fee for lab- based courses is birr 85.00 and for non lab- courses birr 76.00 per Cr. Hr. However, for off – campus sites there are extra costs like transportation (fuel), instructors per diem and payments for schools and school directors. Thus by considering these variables the cost analysis is described below. In addition, a clinical attachment course costs 225.00 birr per Cr. Hr and laboratory attachment course costs 370.00 birr per Cr. H for health science.
Work Linkages
To make its works and services smoother and accessible Mettu University Continuing Education Program (MeU CDEP) closely works with different governmental organizations like Mettu Health Science College, Mettu Carl Hospital, Mettu Secondary and Preparatory School, Mettu Teachers Education College, Mettu TVET College and Bedelle Lemlem Kharl Junior School ,Gambella Agriculture and Natural Resource College, Gambella Regional State Agriculture & Rural Development and Education Bureaus. It also works in collaboration with the Zonal, Woredas’ and Towns’ education offices.
The University has arranged classrooms in Mettu Secondary and Preparatory School, Mettu Kharl Hospital, and Mettu Health Science College for Mettu Education Centre, Lemlem Kharl Junior School for Bedelle Education Centre and Gambella Agriculture and Natural Resource College for Gambella Education Centre to provide teaching-learning in a comfortable and accessible way.
Educational Facilities
To assure quality of education The University CDEP has organized library and computer lab services. In areas where there gaps in Engineering, Natural Sciences and Health Sciences the MeU CDEP provides Practical education services by working in collaboration with the Mettu & Dabana TVET colleges, Mettu Teachers Education College and Mettu Carl Hospital respectively. In addition to these it is organizing its own Practical education laboratory facilities.
Admission Requirements /Critera for CDEP
Mettu University would receive an applicant for evening, weekend, summer and distance degree programs provided that the applicant:
Ø Completed preparatory class and fulfills the country’s higher education admission requirements.
Ø Completed grade 10 ( ten ) and graduated with diploma from recognized institutions and satisfies the following criteria :
§ Should take certificate of competence (COC) exam of at least level –IV in his/her field of study and scored a pass mark.
§ At least ( 2 ) two years work experience in his /her field of study or two year related work experience after taking the COC
§ Should provide a support letter from his /her employer
§ For teacher education program and agricultural extension trainees the selection criteria may not necessarily abide on the above rules as long as the applicant applies for upgrading on his / her previous field of specialization.
§ Completed grade 12 (twelve) and graduated with diploma (12 + 2) from recognized educational institutions /collages.
ü Completed grade 12 (twelve) in previous curriculum and satisfies the following criteria
ü Have a minimum ESLCE GPA of 3.0 points and above for Female &
ü Have a minimum ESLCE GPA of 3.2 points and above for Male from 1993-1995 E.C.
ü Applicants who register by new grade 12 (preparatory) result depend on the following criteria.
? 2006E.C 250 and above
? 2005, 2004 and 2003 E.C 265 and above
? 2002 E.C 280 pts and above
? 2001 E.C 190 pts and above
? 2000 and 1999 E.C 150 pts and above
? 1998 E.C 175 pts and above
? 1997 E.C 125 pts and above
? 1996 E.C 105 pts and above
? 1995 E.C 101 pts and above
§ The relevance of the program will be given a higher emphasis
§ The relevant programs on which an applicant will be eligible to apply depend on the associations of programs to each other.
§ Must pass entrance examination to be administered by Mettu University.
§ Must produce favorable recommendation from their present employer or from persons who can satisfy to their professional capabilities
