 Rationale of the program

Mathematics is a fundamental field of study that plays a pivotal role in the development of science, technology, business, and computer science. It profoundly influences the socioeconomic development of a society and civilization. Thus, it is imperative that students be equipped with strong Mathematical knowledge and skills which enable them to be productive in areas where rigorous thought and precision of results are emphasized. Curriculum development is also a dynamic process which requires continuous assessment. Thus updating and harmonizing national curriculum is vital to ensure the quality, standard and relevance in line with the objective conditions of the country. In light with this, the Ministry of Education, higher education strategy center, has taken the task of harmonization of various national universities science curricula that are underway to accomplish the above objectives. The task demands not only to harmonize the curricula designed by cluster of national universities but also to enrich it by incorporating good practices from exemplary European universities. Thus, the need to design a viable harmonized B.Sc degree curriculum that meets the current global trend is the order of the day.

  • Setup Mathematical models methods.
  • Assist and participate in conducting research.
  • Reason logically and think critically.
  • Demonstrate environmental, social, cultural and political awareness.
  • Act in an ethical manner, recognize issues involved in his/her career in particular and in the community in general exercise the power of self-expression.

1. Rationale of the program

Universities are expected to play a vital and vanguard role in the socio-economic development of the country by producing competent, committed, and ethical scholars at different levels that can take positions and responsibilities in the different sectors that are in need of such inputs for their success.

There has been huge expansion of higher education in the country since 2004, bringing the total number of higher institutions of the country to about 34.  It is also expected that ten additional universities will soon be opened. All these universities require qualified M.Sc. graduates to run their programs. The demand is high and requires an urgent solution.

Aksum University, being one of the universities in the country and carrying this crucial assignment, is working hard to produce competent, ethical and responsible professionals in many disciplines that have immense contributions in the socio-economic development endeavors of the country.

Mathematics, as a tool for learning rigorous and logical thinking, is irreplaceable; it helps to develop intuition, imagination, and a critical sense. It is also an international language and an important element of our culture. Moreover, by its interactions with other sciences, mathematics is playing an increasing role in designing and developing objects for our daily life. But most people tend not to be aware of this, and for them mathematics has lost its meaning.

Mathematics is everywhere. Without it there would be no computers, no software systems, no mobile phones, no design workshops for car and aeronautical manufacturers, no satellite localization systems, signal processing, genome decoding, weather forecasting, cryptography, smart cards, or robots. Beyond its role as an academic science and a basic learning tool in schools, mathematics is omnipresent in today’s society. It follows, accompanies, and sometimes precedes the current scientific and technological advances, which rely on the latest results in contemporary fundamental research, as much as they benefit from the accumulated discoveries of the past. Lastly, the need for mathematics grows with the acceleration in technological creation and change. One cannot do without it when confronted with the need to develop, control, or analyze increasingly complex systems.

Need assessment conducted for the program in different schools, colleges, and higher learning institutions has clearly shown that there is high demand for specialists in mathematics both at M.Sc. and PhD levels. The feasibility of the program is justified by the location of the University, the presence of potential customers that are looking for training in the area, government interest, presence of stakeholders that can hire graduated scholars in the area and others.   Therefore, launching the program shall have enormous contribution in the socioeconomic development of the country by providing highly qualified personnel to the different sectors involved in the renaissance of Ethiopia.

2. Objectives

The objectives of the program are to:

  • Produce trained manpower in mathematics for higher learning institutions of the country.
  • initiate, promote and foster research in the various disciplines of mathematics
  • produce trained man power that can work as researcher in industries/ or research institutions

3. Graduate Profile

After the completion of the study the graduates are expected to have the requisite knowledge, critical thinking ability, and effective communication skills on the profession and thus:

  • Shall be equipped with the subject matter knowledge in mathematics.
  • Will acquire good research knowledge to identify societal problems and conduct research by applying the basic principles of mathematics to solve these problems.
  • Will acquire the theoretical, practical and technical knowledge and skills.
  • Will become enthusiastic, responsible, ethical and committed to their profession, work and nation.
  • Will be enabled to model and solve physical problems.

4. Professional Profile

Upon completion of the postgraduate program in mathematics, a graduate will acquire scientific knowledge, develop critical thinking and problem solving ability, effective communication skills and ethical responsibility to carry out his/her assignments and thus can:

  • Be recruited in higher learning institutions, colleges and schools after attending the basic pedagogical trainings.
  • Assist, participate in and conduct research in various mathematical disciplines in various sectors.
  • Work as researchers in industries, research institutions and governmental and non-governmental organizations.
  • Pursue further trainings in national as well as international higher learning institutions.

5. Admission requirements

Admission into this program requires fulfillment of the following criteria:

6. Academic Requirements

  • The candidate must successfully complete B.Sc. program in mathematics or equivalent fields (physics, statistics, Engineering, computer science) with good academic stand as can be judged by the CGPA or equivalent ECTS.
  • If the candidate is not from Mathematics background, he/she may be required to take deficiency (bridging courses) that should have been covered in his/her undergraduate program. The candidate registered for such courses is expected to score pass mark (C and above) in the course(s). However, the marks earned will not be considered for calculating the CGPA. Registration for deficiency courses will be with undergraduate students where the courses are offered.
  • A candidate who has a high scholastic standing as confirmed by his/her professional experience and has received good recommendations shall be given priority for admission.
  • Moreover, priorities in admission may be granted to government sponsored candidates as per the pressing needs of the government.
  • A candidate is expected to pass the entrance examination to be set by the department.

7. Non-academic Requirements

  • The Department Council (DC) may, for pedagogic reasons or special requirements of the field of study, set appropriate age limits subject to approval by the Academic Staff Affairs Committee (ASAC) of the University.
  • The department may also set appropriate work experience requirements after obtaining the Bachelors degree subject to approval by the ASAC.
  • The candidate must produce a minimum of two letters of recommendation from undergraduate instructors, employers or professional associates.
  • Affirmative action will be considered for female applicants and candidates with some disabilities (10% of their CGPA shall be added).
  • The minimum intake of this program will be at least 5 students. However, the optimum (minimum and maximum) number of students shall mainly depend on the number of available teaching staff, availability of required materials, space and demand for training.

8. Duration of study

  1. The duration of study is 2 years comprising of four semesters.
  2. No Master candidate may anticipate finishing the program in less than one and half academic year.
  3. A Master candidate may be allowed to continue for one more year if it can be shown that the extension is required because of some justified reasons and is accepted by the Department Graduation Committee (DGC) and DC. Such extension of time shall be recommended by the DGC and approved by the DC every semester.
  4. A Master candidate taking more than the normal two-year duration for completion of the program shall fulfill the special conditions set forth by the DC.
