  1. Overview: Establishment and Graduate Summary

The Graduate Program commenced in 2004 with the support of NORAD and in partnership with the Gimlekollen School of Journalism and Communication in Norway. However, the NORAD support was terminated in December 2007.Thus after January 2008 Addis Ababa University started to manage the graduate program independently. It also merged the former Ethiopian Mass Media Training Institute with the School and established the present School of Journalism and Communication consisting of both graduate and undergraduate programs.
The School is guided by the commitment embodied in the following set of core values: academic freedom, excellence, integrity and professionalism, diversity, tolerance and mutual respect, social responsibility and public service, personal initiative, reliance on the authority of reason, student-centeredness, quality and efficiency. Currently, the School has three undergraduate and two postgraduate programs.

  1. Undergraduate and Graduate Program Objectives:

Guided by the AAU mission and vision, the School of Journalism and Communication has designed its PhD, MA and BA programs with the following goals:

  • Develop within AAU self-reliant capacity in terms of manpower and infrastructure and make itself the centre of excellence in journalism and communication.
  • Produce adroit journalists that could play a significant role in the democratization process of the country
  • Train researchers who conduct public opinion pools and organizational social media audits
  • Produce scholars that can analyze and gain insights of communities, cultures, lifestyles and values of audiences.
  • Strengthen quality teaching and research in journalism and communication education and practice.
  • Produce graduates who go beyond ordinary journalistic skills and practices by way of relating knowledge to political, economic and social processes in Ethiopia
  • Produce professionals that are capable of analyzing, theorizing and leading the media and communication industry in the country.
  • Harvest scholars who demonstrate a deep understanding of, and enduring inquisitiveness about, the critical concepts and principles of knowledge claims in subject matter and field communication

Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for the MA and PhD programs:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, public relations, social sciences, liberal arts, and other related areas from an accredited college or university;
  • Pass entrance exam and an interview;
  • A sponsorship letter from the employer or a statement of self-sponsorship
  • A one or two-page statement of purpose produced by the applicant.
  • For the PhD program Candidates with Master’s Degree in another discipline (different from journalism and communication) may be required to complete additional coursework.
